Important Warnings & Instructions
Teakettle handle and whistle may get hot. ALWAYS WEAR OVEN MITTS WHEN HANDLING TEAKETTLE OR FLIPPING THE WHISTLE LEVER OPEN to prevent possible burn injury.
Steam escaping from the lid or spout can burn you. Do not open the lid until water has cooled, or wear an Oven Mitt to protect your hand.
Do not overfill the teakettle. Overfilling the teakettle can cause boiling water to be forced out of the spout. You could be burned. Never allow water level to go above the etched MAX. WATER mark on the inside of the teakettle.
If you have a gas stove, do not allow the gas flames to rise up the sides of the teakettle. They can make the handle and whistle too hot to touch, risking burns, and will tarnish the teakettle.
After the water boils, turn off the heat and allow the teakettle to stand for 15 seconds before opening the spout. Wear an oven mitt when pouring hot water. ALWAYS POINT THE SPOUT AWAY FROM YOU WHEN BOILING WATER OR OPENING THE SPOUT.
Never let water in the teakettle boil dry. Leaving a dry teakettle on a hot burner can melt the aluminum base and damage the teakettle and burner, and could cause a fire.
If teakettle has been boiled dry, TURN OFF HEAT and do not remove teakettle until it has cooled. When the teakettle has cooled, examine the teakettle to be sure the aluminum bottom has not melted or otherwise been damaged. Do not reuse a teakettle that has boiled dry and the aluminum has melted.
DO NOT LEAVE A HEATING TEA KETTLE UNATTENDED. Forgotten teakettles boil dry. DO NOT RELY ON THE WHISTLE to remind you about an unattended teakettle. The whistle may occasionally not sound (see section to right).
Wear an Oven Mitt when Kettle is Hot!
Useful Hints
Before first use, wash the inside and outside with hot soapy water, rinse and repeat. This will ensure that any oil residue left from manufacturing is completely removed.
Water must come to a boil for teakettle to whistle.
Do not heat teakettle empty or add cold water to a hot teakettle (let teakettle cool at room temperature before re-filling). Adding cold water to a hot teakettle can cause blue/brown heat discoloration to appear.
Tap water may cause mineral build-up or spots on the inside of your teakettle and may cause the whistle to stop working. Use filtered water to prevent mineral buildup and to extend the life of your teakettle. If you notice mineral deposits in the inside of your teakettle, remove them by regularly boiling a solution 1 quart of water with 1/4 cup of vinegar for 10-15 minutes. Rinse.
To keep your teakettle spot-free, rinse in hot water and hand dry. You may want to occasionally clean your teakettle with Chantal Stainless Steel & Aluminum Cleaner. Note: Everyday use may result in minor scratching, but this will not affect performance. DO NOT use steel wool, scouring pads, oven cleaners, bleach or strong abrasive cleaners.
When storing your teakettle for a period of time, keep the lid and whistle open to dry out the interior, but only when it's cool to avoid the dangers of hot handles, hot water and steam.
Frequently Asked Question:
What if my teakettle doesn't whistle?
If your teakettle doesn't whistle, use the checklist below. Make adjustments to your teakettle only when it is cool to avoid the dangers of hot handles, hot water and steam.
The water must come to a boil for the teakettle to whistle.
Make sure your whistle is free of mineral deposits by boiling a solution of 1 quart water and 1/4 cup vinegar in your kettle for 10 to 15 minutes.
Push down on the lid to make sure it's on tight and that excessive steam isn't escaping.
Push down on the whistle to makes sure it closes flush onto the spout.
Check for condensation. As the teakettle heats up and steam is pushed through the whistle, condensation will occasionally form on the whistle reeds. This could cause the whistle not to sound. Simply turn off the burner and let the teakettle stand for 15 seconds. Flip the whistle lever up and down repeatedly (wear an Oven Mitt to avoid burning your hand) until the reeds are free of condensation. If the whistle still does not sound, it may be necessary to let the kettle completely cool down and then blow through the whistle to remove excess condensation.
If your teakettle still does not whistle, contact Chantal Customer Service at 1-800-365-4354 for a replacement whistle.
