Classic Stainless Steel Teakettle Use & Care
Read all instructions before using your Chantal Teakettle. Save these instructions.

Useful Hints: How to Clean and Maintain the Chantal Teakettle

  • Before first use, wash the inside and outside with hot soapy water, rinse and dry.

  • To activate whistle, kettle should be at least half full of water, but below the spout opening on the inside of the teakettle. Filling with water above the spout opening will cause whistle to sputter and hot water could be forced out of the spout.

  • Distilled and chlorinated water may cause wear on the stainless steel inside of your teakettle. Tap water can cause mineral build-up on the inside of your teakettle and can cause the whistle to stop working. This will happen if you have hard water in your area, which 85% of Americans have. Heated hard water will form mineral deposits (a scale of calcium and magnesium minerals) that will coat the inside of your teakettle, similar to what it does to the inside of your hot water heater. We suggest using cold filtered water to reduce this mineral build-up and to extend the life of your teakettle.

  • If you notice mineral deposits (small white dots, white scale substance or a dulled surface) in the inside of your teakettle, remove it by boiling a solution 1 quart of water with 1/4 cup of vinegar for 10-15 minutes on medium heat, rinse and repeat if all of the scale has not been removed. Note: Your teakettle whistle will stop whistling if mineral deposits build up.

  • If the water in your area has a high iron content, you may begin to notice rusty (dark-reddish) discolorations or spots on the inside of your kettle. These will be more apparent if the kettle is boiled dry. Note: This does not affect the functionality or safety of your teakettle and only diminishes the appearance of the inside of your kettle.

  • If you need to scrub the inside of the kettle then use a nylon or sponge scrubbing brush. The inside edge of the teakettle might have sharp edges.

  • Do not heat teakettle empty or add cold water to a hot teakettle (let teakettle cool at room temperature before re-filling). Adding cold water to a hot teakettle can cause blue/brown heat discoloration to appear from the sudden temperature change. Note: This does not affect the functionality or safety of your teakettle and only diminishes the appearance of the inside of your kettle.

  • If the lid becomes difficult to remove due to expansion, press the notches located on the inner lip firmly inward.

  • When storing your teakettle for a period of time, keep the whistle flipper open to dry out the interior, but allow it to cool first to avoid the dangers of hot handles, hot water and steam.

  • To keep your teakettle spot-free, rinse in hot soapy water and hand dry. You may want to occasionally clean the exterior of your teakettle with Chantal Stainless Steel and Aluminum Cleaner (found on our website, www.chantal.com ). The use of our Chantal Stainless Steel and Aluminum Cleaner will clean tarnished exterior surfaces due to overheating or gas flames. Note: DO NOT use steel wool, scouring pads, oven cleaners, bleach or strong abrasive cleaners. These products will permanently scratch the stainless steel.

IMPORTANT WARNINGS & INSTRUCTIONS

  • Teakettle handle and whistle may get hot. ALWAYS WEAR OVEN MITTS WHEN HANDLING TEAKETTLE OR FLIPPING THE WHISTLE LEVER OPEN to prevent possible burn injury.

  • Always use a burner on the back row of the stove to keep it out of reach of small children.

  • Use a burner smaller in diameter than the kettle. This may prevent excess heat from making the handle too hot to touch.

  • Steam escaping from the lid or spout can burn you. Do not open the lid until water has cooled, or wear an Oven Mitt to protect your hand.

  • Do not overfill the teakettle. Overfilling the teakettle can cause boiling water to be forced out of the spout. You could be burned. The water level should always be below the spout on the inside of the teakettle.

  • If you have a gas stove, do not allow the gas flames to rise up the sides of the teakettle. They can make the handle too hot to touch, risking burns, and will tarnish your teakettle. ALWAYS WEAR OVEN MITTS TO PROTECT YOUR HANDS.

  • After the water boils, turn off the heat and allow the teakettle to stand for 15 seconds before flipping the whistle open (wearing an oven mitt) and then pouring the water. ALWAYS POINT THE SPOUT AWAY FROM YOU WHEN BOILING WATER OR OPENING THE SPOUT.

  • Never let water in the teakettle boil dry. Leaving a dry teakettle on a hot burner can melt the aluminum base and damage the teakettle and burner, and could cause a fire.

  • If water has been boiled dry from the teakettle and the bottom disc has melted, TURN OFF HEAT and do not remove teakettle until it has cooled. Do not reuse a teakettle that has boiled dry and the aluminum has melted.

  • DO NOT LEAVE A HEATING TEAKETTLE UNATTENDED. Forgotten teakettles boil dry. DO NOT RELY ON THE WHISTLE to remind you about an unattended teakettle. The whistle is not a SAFETY device and may occasionally not sound. It is an alert system, but it is mechanical and can fail. WEAR AN OVEN MITT WHEN THE KETTLE IS HOT!

Frequently Asked Questions:

What if my teakettle doesn't whistle?
If your teakettle doesn't whistle, use the checklist below. Make adjustments to your teakettle only when it is cool to avoid the dangers of hot water and steam.

  1. The water must come to a boil for the kettle to whistle.

  2. Make sure your Hohner® whistle is free of mineral deposits by boiling a solution of 1 quart water and 1/4 cup vinegar in your kettle for 10 to 15 minutes.

  3. Push down on the lid to make sure it's on tight. Also, make sure the gasket is in place. The gasket is the black rubber ring on the lid rim.

  4. Check for condensation. As the kettle heats up and steam is pushed through the whistle, condensation will occasionally form on the whistle reeds. This will cause the whistle not to sound. Simply flip the whistle lever up and down repeatedly (wear an oven mitt to avoid burning your hand) until the reeds are free of condensation. If the whistle still does not sound, it may be necessary to let the kettle completely cool down and then blow through the whistle to remove excess condensation.

  5. If your teakettle still does not whistle, contact Chantal Customer Service at 1-800-365-4354 or 713-467-9949.

What if my teakettle's whistle flipper does not close properly?
The whistle on your teakettle has several moving parts. As such, the flipper might become a little difficult to close. To remedy this situation, open the flipper of the whistle and spray a small amount of cooking oil onto the end of the metal tongue, and … VOILÁ!, the flipper opens and closes smoothly again.

CLASSIC COPPER TEAKETTLE USE & CARE
Important Tips

  • Exterior: Electroplated copper coating.

  • Bottom: Copper disk for quick boiling. Use on a low flame. If gas flames go up the sides, they will discolor the copper, but can be cleaned with our recommended cleaning solutions.

  • Interior: Durable stainless steel construction.

Important Note:
This kettle works on electric, gas, ceramic, and glass cooktops. Please use an oven mitt when heating on a gas stove as the kettle's handle & whistle may get hot due to the heat from the flame rising up the sides. There is no exterior lacquer coating on Chantal's Classic Copper Teakettle. Some manufacturers finish the outside of their copper products with a lacquer coating to prolong the brand new shiny finish. This coating must be removed before using the product for any type of cooking, even boiling water. For environmental and safety reasons, Chantal does not lacquer coat its copper teakettle.

Caring for your Chantal Classic Copper Teakettle:
While polishing your copper teakettle will help to maintain its gleaming shine, it will not improve its performance. The change in color that copper takes on over time (called the "patina") reflects its durability and its use. For the best cleaning of a brand new copper teakettle try these homemade cleaning recipes which are perfect for maintaining the shine without scratching.
Ingredients:
Salt, vinegar and lemon or lime juice
Directions:
Put 1 tablespoon of salt and 1 tablespoon of lemon or lime juice in a small bowl. Mix the ingredients. Use a clean damp sponge (cloth materials will scratch the surface) to soak up the solution and apply to small areas of the kettle and quickly rinse under running water. Pat dry with a soft paper towel. Another recipe simply calls for 1 tablespoon of vinegar and 1 tablespoon of lemon or lime juice and 2 tablespoons of salt mixed in small bowl. Saturate a clean damp sponge with this mixture and apply to small areas of the kettle and quickly rinse under running water. Pat dry with a soft paper towel. For removing heavily tarnished areas we recommend that you polish your Chantal Copper Kettle with a good commercial product, such as our Chantal Instant Copper Polish or Wrights® Copper Cream. We have found these to be easy products to use, with good results, but please always apply with a clean damp sponge, quickly rinse under running water and pat dry with a soft paper towel. Never allow a commercial type cleaner to dry on the teakettle. Whether it's shiny and new or aged to a darkened patina, we wish you years of enjoyment with your Chantal Classic Copper Teakettle.
